detail of Joseph Moxon’s 1695 map Paradise or the Garden of Eden with the Countries circumjacent inhabited by the Patriarchs
The Garden of Eden is shown at the intersection of the Euphrates in an area now occupied by Iraq. Adam and Eve can be seen standing by the Tree of Knowledge. To the right, an angel banishes them from Garden into the arid mountains of what is now Iran.
Joseph Moxon was a mathematician and a pioneer in the production of pocket-sized terrestrial globes. His first globe had a 5 cm diameter and had a case with a map of the heavens on the inside.
